BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS COMPLETED BY DR.A.K.SRIVASTAVA

.1,A comprehensive study on fungal airspora at Lucknow for three consecutive years starting from november,1982 to October, 1984 resulted in the identification of 25 spore types and isolation of 60 fungal species belonging to varioUs taxonomic group (Phycomycotina -6, Ascomycotina -2, Basidiomycodina -1 and Deuteromycotina -51). The genus Alternaria (15.3 PERCENT) has domenated in spore count followed by Aspergillus (11.11) ,Cladosporium(8.17) ,Helminthosporium(7.53) and Culvularia(7.03). Annual spore count with monthly occurrence and seasonal variation was established. On the basis of consistency in their occurrence and coefficient of variation, the species were categorised into 4 groups and a key for visual identification of trapped spora has been developed.

2. ALLERGENIC POTENTIAL OF COMMON FUNGI ISOLATED FROM VARIOUS INDOOR AND OUTDOOR WORKING ENVIRONMENTS WERE TESTED IN HUMAN SUBJECTS (PATIENTS). AN OCCURRENCE CALENDAR OF ALLERGENIC HAS DEEVELOPED TO FACILITATE DIAGNOSIS AND TREETMENT OF PATIENTS WITH ALLERGENIC MANIFESTATION CAUSED BY MOULD. WORST MONTHS AND SYMPTOMS SCORE OF THE PATIENTS HAS ALSO BEEN RELATED WITH THE OCCURRENCE OF FUNGAL SPORES IN AIR.

3. TWENTY FOUR FUNGI ISOLATED FROM EAR WAX OF OTITIS MEDIA OF AGRICULTURAL FIELD WORKERS, OF WHICH 18 ARE REPORTED FOR THE FIRST TIME FROM INDIA. GERMINATION OF SOME FUNGAL SPORES IN OTITIS MEDIA UNDER VARIED RH AT 370C PROVED THENSELVES AS MOST POTENTIAL AGENT FOR CAUSING OTOMYCOSIS OTHERWISE REPORTED FUNGISTATIC EFFECTS OF OTITIS MEDIA IS CONFIRMED, AS SPORES OF MOST OF THE ISOLATED FUNGI COULD NOT GERMINATED. Alternaria humicola AND Aspergillus niveus ARE ADDED TO THE LITERATURE AS NEW ETIOLOGIC AGENTS CAUSING OTOMYCOSIS. LIPASE ACTIVITY OF THESE TWO FUNGI WERE ESTIMATED .IN VITRO DRUG SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THESE NEW ETIOLOGIC AGENTS WAS ALSO TESTED.

4. THREE FUNGI ALTERNARIA HUMICOLA, A PLURISEPTATA AND ASPERGILLUS NIGER ARE REPORTES AS NEW ETIOLOGIC AGENTS FOR CAUSING ONYCHOMYCOSIS. KERATIN DEGRADING ACTIVITY OF SEVEN FUNGI ISOLATED FROM SYMPTOMATIC AND ASYMPTOMATIC NAILS WAS ALSO REPORTED.

5. PROTEIN A - A POWERFUL IMMUNOSTIMULATING GLYCOPROTEIN (M.W.42000 DALTAN) ISOLATED FROM THE CELL WALL OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS COWAN I STRAIN, HAS PROVED TO PROTECT ANIMALS (MICE) 100 PERCENT, AGAINST EXPERIMENTAL CANDIDIASIS, AND THIS PROTECTION COULD BE DEMONSTRATED BY CFU. KINETICS IN LIVER, SPLEEN, KIDNEY AND PERITONEAL CAVITY, LEUCOCYTE COUNTS AND PHAGOCYTOSIS BY MONOCYTE DERIVED MACROPHAGES.

6. DIAGNOSIS OF FUNGAL INFECTIONS IN MORE THAN 8000 PATIENTS CLINICALLY SUSPECTED FOR MYCOSES, WERE CONFIRMED BY LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS, IN ADDITION TO THE ASSESSMENT OF RESPONSE TO TREATMENT AND MONITORING RESOLUTION OF INFECTION. A READY RECKNER FOR THE DIAGNOSIS CUTANEOUS CANDIDIASIS HAS PREPARED.

7. IN-VITRO ANTIMYCOTIC POTENTIAL OF MORE THAN 100 HOMOEOPATHIC DRUGS WERE EVALUATED. THUJA OCCIDENTALIS (Q), NUTRUM MURIATICUM 1000, PETROLEUM 30, TELLURIUM 30 AND SEPIA 1000 WERE REPORTED FIRST TIME TO HAVE SIGNIFICANT ANTIMYCOTIC POTENTIAL AGAINST PATHOGENIC FUNGI.

8. SIXTY FOUR HOMOEOPATHIC MOTHER TINCTURES WERE MONITORED FOR THEIR OPTICAL DENSITY IN VIEW OF THEIR STANDARDIZATION. OPTICAL DENSITY (OD) OF HOMOEOPATHIC DRUGS (Q) RANGES IN BETWEEN.02 (AVENA SATIVA) TO 1.5 (CEANOTHUS Q). SEVERAL DRUGS WERE FOUND TO HAVE SIMILAR OD. A DISCUSSION ON THE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT THEIR ACTION WERE RELATED WITH OD.
